Dylan wrote the song after returning from a long UK tour in 1965.
The song was an instant hit, shooting to the top of the charts in the UK and the US in spite of its extended length and gloomy subject matter.
The lyrics offer a fascinating glimpse into Dylan's work process as he tries out variations on the songs famous refrain, including "shut up and deal" and "get down and kneel", before settling on "how does it feel".

They're written on four sheets of stationary from the Roger Smith Hotel in Washington DC ("One block from the Whitehouse") and were sold alongside a set of notes that provide an insight into Dylan's life and mindset at the time.
The autograph lyrics to Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, regarded as being among his finest, also sold well, achieving $485,000.
Dylan said of the song: "I wrote it at the time of the Cuban crisis. I was in Bleecker Street in New York.
"We just hung around at night - people sat around wondering if it was the end, and so did I. Would one o'clock the next day ever come?
"…It was a song of desperation."
On June 20 the autograph lyrics to the Beatles' Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite sold for £140,500 ($239,412) at Christie's in London.
