“By no other means can our favorite heroes – statesmen, soldiers, authors … be brought so close to us.  By no other means are they so clearly revealed to us in all the intimate details of their public and private lives.  Autograph letters ‘are the true living word shadows of the great … Through them we see their authors, perhaps for the first time, in a natural light, revealed by their own pen strokes.’”

Introduction of collecting autographs

Collecting signatures of famous figures has been a favoured hobby for many centuries.  Cicero was very proud of a letter from Julius Caeser. Even many great personalities of world history have been collectors themselves – for example Queen Victoria, John F. Kennedy, Edgar Allen Poe, Johannes Brahms or Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe.
But signatures of well known people are much more – in many cases they are  „history in ink“ and the exciting  story how someone got a signature can also inspire  „non-collectors“. High-quality autographs  have been used in the past intensified as investment and the development of prices can definitely be compared with blue chip stocks.
